Matt Doubek

Meet Matt Doubek, an independent visual artist-constructionist and surface manipulator who owns and manages Alias Krap Masters Studio.  He also manages Church of the Arts, where local artists can find an affordable space to work and be creative.  Matt was recently honored as the recipient of Lafayette’s Art Hero award.

Thank you Matt for continuing to promote and push local art to the forefront of the Lafayette community.

Q: What inspired you or led you to your current career?

A: I went to the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul. It was a small school with only forty of us in our class. I got a job in school working as a caricature artist for Tom Richmond of MAD Magazine.  Then I moved here and ended up getting a job with the guy who I was renting a place from.  I started to help him with remodel projects at some of his properties, both residential and commercial. He is artistic in the sense of furniture design and we started working together and doing these high-end architectural projects in the Boulder area.  That’s when I realized how many forms art truly can come in.  I then began helping with gallery shows and rotating exhibits for the Denver Art Museum and Museum of Boulder.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Louisville and Lafayette, and what do you love there?

A: The Post Brewing Co., Community, Teocalli Cocina, William Oliver’s, and Romero’s K9 Club & Tap House to name a few.

Q: How long have you lived or worked in Louisville and Lafayette?

A:   Since 1998.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?  And why?

A: Prague – that’s where my ancestors are from. My family, my sister’s family, and the family of my wife’s sister all get together in one spot every other year.  A couple years ago we did Hawaii and Prague will be our next destination, which will also be my over my 50th birthday.

Q: What is your favorite movie OR what is the first movie you remember seeing in a theatre?

A: The first movie I remember seeing in the theatre would be Star Wars in 1977.  My favorite movie is Raising Arizona, I just loved the opening sequence.

Q: What advice would you give a crowd of people?

A: Do something that you like to do. Don’t punish yourself, do stuff that you enjoy. Get more than 6 hours of sleep. Get messy, don’t be afraid to wear holes through the knees of your pants or get dirt under your finger nails. Everyone should take a marketing 101 class because people are too easily influenced by cheap marketing.

Q: What is something on your bucket list?

A: Sky diving cuz it’s scary as sh#@.  And scuba diving – my daughter and I got certified together last year.

Q: What is your favorite music/ 3 bands you would like to see (dead or alive)?

A: We see a lot of shows, so that’s tough to nail it down.  Led Zeppelin in their beginnings.  Pink Floyd would be super fun.  I’m looking forward to the Young Fathers coming back through. That was a really good show!  They’re brothers from Ireland and use their bodies to make percussion.

Q: What current / former local business makes you the most nostalgic about Louisville and Lafayette?

A: I don’t recall the name, but a long time ago there was a ranch and farm store, and I loved going there. pARTiculars has always been here. East Simpson Coffee Company is another great staple.

Q: Choosing anyone alive and a non-relative: with whom would you love to have lunch?  Why?  Where in Louisville and Lafayette would you have lunch?

A: I think it would be fun to hang out and drink with Trevor Noah from the Daily Show. Similarly, John Stewart would be fun, but it would be a little bit brain tiring. George Bush Jr., I think he would be fun to have a beer with now that he’s out of the political arena, and he’s doing art!

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years?

A: In 5 years I hope Church of the Arts still exists and am keeping an affordable space for artists to do their thing. I want to grow the entertainment business aspect of my company as well.  Oh, and our house remodel will be done – hopefully!

Q: (Even for friends or family), what is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?

A: I listen and read a lot about constitutional law.

Q: What 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?

A: Safety, Family, and Familiarity.

Q: If you were cast into a major motion picture and had your choice of anyone to be your co-star, who would you choose?

A: Paul Rudd, he would be fun. I think it would be fun to hang out with Brad Pitt too. He has a love for architecture and I think he’d be a good person to have a conversation with. Oh, and Nicolas Cage when he was younger.

Q: Is there something that you can add that would benefit or add value to the community, what do you think would that be?

A: More younger voices on committees.  I’ve been going to the Legacy of Lafayette Advisory Committee meetings and there was just one person there under forty. I’ve been kind of disappointed because these advisory boards don’t really have many young voices. Getting younger people involved.
